Thank you for looking at my website! I am just starting up in business and can't wait to help you with your musical endeavours.
Making music has always been central to my life whether it is singing in choirs, playing in orchestras, teaching classroom music or simply playing the piano to relax after a busy day. I have sung all my life starting in my church choir in Cardiff and leading up to singing on several CDs with various choirs. I have directed choirs and amateur dramatic groups, working with adults of all ages and abilities, and conducted groups of school children in brass groups, swing band, orchestra, pop choir and even a steel band!
My piano playing has been one of the anchors in my life. I started having lessons when I was 7 years old and I’m still learning today through my students! As a secondary school music teacher, the piano was a staple for lessons whether it was playing for class singing or accompanying GCSE and A level students for exams; it was a vital part of my life.
I began teaching the piano over 30 years ago before taking my PGCE and going into classroom music teaching. All the students I have entered for ABRSM exams have passed, several with merits or distinctions. I have also recently participated in an ABRSM examiner’s course which gave me some valuable insight and has influenced my lessons with students.
I recently resigned from secondary school teaching in order to spend more time on my individual piano and music theory students, in a less stressful atmosphere! Many of my current students are adults who have taken up the piano to help keep their brains active and to provide a new challenge in their lives. One of my particular strengths is that I get on with people of all ages as you can see from my testimonials.
I am also experienced with working with people with special educational needs. I have several students who are on the autistic spectrum and have developed a way of teaching them that can maximise their potential through a patient and calm approach.
Do you need a piano accompanist for your instrumental/vocal exam, an organist or pianist for your church service, or somebody to play the piano for your rehearsals? Here I am!
If you have reached grade 5 on your instrument and you need some help with your grade 5 theory in order to progress to the next level, look no further. Increase your confidence in A level or GCSE music with someone who has been teaching them both for the last 25 years.
You are never too old to learn to play the piano and whether you want to take exams or just play for pleasure, your lessons will be enjoyable as well as worthwhile.
Do you have a piece of music which is just a little too difficult for your choir to sing? I have 25 years of experience in arranging music for a specific group of singers or instrumentalists or for the particular abilities of the performers.
Catrin has been helping me to recover my piano skills after 50 years of not playing at all during my nursing career, and starting from scratch all over again. She has been enormously patient and supportive as my ageing fingers, brain and eyesight have sluggishly recalled past skills, musical notes and terms.
I would certainly recommend Catrin to anyone wanting else of mature years who wants to learn to play the piano.
Catrin has worked for chipping Norton Amateur Operatic Society for a number of years as our musical director. Her professionalism and ability to communicate with the casts of the show we have been producing has been superb her work effort and her ability to coach the cast in rehearsals has been wonderful and every member who has had the pleasure of working with her has always gone on to excell themselves in the actual production Catrin has great communication skills and makes rehearsals fun as well as productive
I am a late starter as a piano learner and I have been working with Catrin for two years. She is friendly and encouraging, but pushes you to achieve the highest standard you can by being attentive to what you have time to do during the week and seeking to find pieces of music that will appeal to you. She gives clear advice as to how to tackle new pieces and is patient with you when you find tasks and techniques challenging. I have been encouraged to persevere because of her supportive approach and the fact that she expects you to do well. Her advice as to how long and how to practise has been most helpful in establishing a routine to fit around my work schedule. I feel that I am making progress and fully appreciate that practice is essential.
Catrin is super friendly, very patient and has an encouraging teaching style that is refreshingly different from the stiff, inflexible teaching that I remember having as a child.
For my 8 year old son, I was determined to find a teacher who could nurture and develop his passion for music, and Catrin is brilliant at not only understanding him but also encouraging him and bringing out that passion - both during the lessons and in the time between. I was sufficiently impressed that I have now joined my son in having weekly lessons, which I do for fun and personal enjoyment.
We've had to resort to lessons over FaceTime during lockdown but the quality and value of our lessons has not suffered. We feel that we're achieving the appropriate rate of progress, and more importantly, enjoying our journey into music and learning to play the piano.
I would highly recommend Catrin. She is a brilliant and very creative musician. Extremely reliable.
"Thank you for everything. I really enjoyed music. You're a great teacher."
Here are some recordings of music that I recorded with my son during lockdown. The choral pieces are just the two of us, with the parts multi-tracked to sound like a choir.
I have also included some piano pieces that I have recorded during lockdown.
